Mini Tennis offers the perfect introduction to the sport for children aged 3-10yrs. The use of smaller courts, nets and rackets and lower bouncing balls, allows Mini Tennis enables players to develop vital skills and techniques at an early age, whilst having lots of fun.

There are four stages of LTA Mini Tennis; Tots, Red, Orange and Green, each with their own court size and type of ball.

For detailed information about each mini group, click and expand below:

Tots is for children aged 3 to 5 years old and enables them to learn the basics and how to enjoy the game through a series of fun activities, based on the fundamental areas of balance, co-ordination, agility, movement and racket and ball skills.

Tots play with sponge balls and 17 or 19-inch rackets and the focus is about making it as much fun as possible.

Mini Tennis Red is for players aged 8 and under. It is played on small courts with short rackets and soft balls. It’s just like the real game and gives players opportunities to have long rallies and play different types of shots.

What ball is used?
A foam or felt ball is used which is 75% slower than a yellow ball.
What size court is red ball played on?
A court with dimensions of 11m x 5.5m or 12m x 6m. It’s fine to use badminton court lines.
What height is the net?
80cm at the middle of the net.
What racket is best to use?
A shorter racket of 43cm – 58 cm (17” – 23”) is recommended depending on the size and strength of the player.

Mini Tennis Orange is a great way for players to continue their progress from Mini Tennis Red and is for players aged 8 and 9. It is played with shorter rackets, softer balls and courts are bigger and wider than the red stage but still smaller than full-size tennis courts allowing players to develop a rounded game whilst learning a range of techniques and tactics. It is the next stage before playing on a full sized court and helps players develop different shots and tactics.

What ball is used?
An orange ball is used which is 50% slower than a yellow ball, giving players better control at this important stage of development.
What size court is Mini Tennis Orange played on?
Mini Tennis Orange is played on a 18m x 6.5m court.
What height is the net?
80cm at the middle of the net.

What kind of competitions are there at Mini Tennis Orange?

Mini Tennis Green is a great way for players to continue their progress from Mini Tennis Orange. It is played on a full size tennis court, with bigger rackets and balls which are a little softer than yellow balls. It’s the next stage before moving on to full compression yellow balls on a full sized court and helps players develop and improve all aspects of their game.

Junior Coaching

The Junior Squads programme offers players aged 11 and over a variety of sessions graded by ability, where players can build on what they have learnt through the Mini Tennis programme.

These sessions vary from fun orientated sessions, to more intensive training sessions where players will be able to develop their technique and tactics, as well as the physical and mental side of the game. Players in this programme will be encouraged to enter junior competitions and tournaments as well as team competitions.

Holiday and Half-term Tennis Camps

GDTennis have been running tennis camps for children aged 5-15yrs across venues in surrounding counties for 15 years. GDTennis camps have become the most fun and exciting feature in many kids summer holiday schedules.

The camps run daily throughout the school holiday periods with time options of 10am-1pm, 10am-3pm and for working parents who need a little extra 8.30-4.30pm.

From day one, the children are continually assessed on ability and age to guarantee they are in the right groups. Therefore they will receive the correct level of tuition to improve their skills.

For more information on our Tennis Camps programme, please visit the GDTennis website’s ‘Camps page’.

Table Tennis Coaching

At Farnborough Table Tennis Club coaching and training are delivered by Colin Baggott and Andy Murdock.

They are both Table Tennis England licensed coaches, and have obtained their UKCC Level 1 qualification. Colin and Andy have many years of experience between them and together they have a lot to offer the children. They also have DBS certificates, sports first aid training and have been on valuable ‘safeguarding children’ courses.

We run regular coaching sessions for children on a Friday night from 6.30pm – 7.30pm.

The sessions are for children who are complete beginners all the way through to children that have played before, or for those who simply wish to improve their game.

Table Tennis is for all ages, and can really benefit the kids. It is a fun and fantastic outlet for their boundless energy, and also helps them with the discipline of learning a sport, and the social interaction of the game.

Fees

The cost is £3 per session, the first 3 sessions are free with the use of training bats, which we provide.

If you have any questions speak to Colin Baggott on 07727 200 280, or why not come down on a Friday night and see for yourself. You can speak to any member of the team.

We look forward to seeing you…
